about
The Tenementals and Monica Queen first performed the song at St Luke´s in Glasgow´s East End on 15 September 2023.
David Archibald who is both a founding member and front-man for The Tenementals, said
“The song is about memory. In the song, a woman, Amanda, goes to a factory to remember Manuel, who we learn has died fighting in the mountains. Today, though, it has additional resonance. As we know, the songwriter, Victor Jara, was executed because the Chilean military were afraid of the power of his music, and his socialist beliefs. So, when we sing Te recuerdo Amanda (I Remember You, Amanda), we also remember Victor Jara. And when we remember Victor Jara, his ghost walks with us.”
“We knew we wanted to sing a song with Monica and when we were playing St Luke's last September, we asked her if she would sing this special song with our guitarist, Simon Whittle. We performed it as an encore, and as soon as Monica started singing there was complete silence in the hall. It was a special moment, and we hope that this recording re-imagines something of that.”
